Wednesday, March 23, 2016 - The semi-finals of the prestigious Roux Scholarship were held at UWL on 17 March. 12 chefs competed using our professional-standard facilities, hoping to impress the judges Alain Roux, Andrew Fairlie, David Nicholls and Simon Hulstone, the 2003 scholar.
The Roux Scholarship, first launched in 1984, is a competition open to chefs under 30 in the UK. The winner will receive a three-month stage at a three-starred Michelin restaurant of their choice.
After serving their main course using whole pollock and cockles, competitors were also tasked with preparing a dessert from a mystery box of ingredients.
Six finalists from the London and Birmingham semi-finals will go on to compete for the title of Roux Scholar 2016 at the final, which will be held on Monday 4 April.
Michael Coaker, Head of Restaurants and Operations at UWL said, ‘We were honoured to host the semi-final of the Roux Scholarship. Competitions like this develop young talent and inspire our students to strive for culinary excellence.’
