Curriculum
We have designed this course for students wishing to make a career of research in medical microbiology. It will provide you with the practical and theoretical skills and the knowledge you will need to undertake individual and collaborative research in this field.
Like many areas of biology, the cutting edge of research is primarily focused at the molecular level, using recently developed and constantly improving techniques such as genomics and proteomics.
Increasing knowledge in this area is leading to a better understanding of how micro-organisms cause disease and how this knowledge may be applied to the development of novel approaches to disease therapy.
On this course you will study these areas in depth, with an emphasis on clinical applications.
As an MSc student, you will complete four taught modules: Medical Microbiology – Pathogenesis; Medical Microbiology – Control; Bioinformatics; and Research Skills. You will also undertake an individual research project.
For a PG Diploma, you will take the MSc course minus the project, while the PG Certificate requires you to complete two modules.
