Curtin Malaysia lauds Curtin University’s climb into top 1% of the world’s universities

Miri - 18 August 2017 - Curtin University has climbed into the world’s top 200 universities in the prestigious Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) published on Tuesday.

The University is now placed in the 151-200 band, up from the 201-300 band in 2016 and 2015, and from 301-400 in 2014 and 401-500 in 2013, with the University estimated to be 180th in the world and 9th in Australia.

Curtin University Vice-Chancellor Professor Deborah Terry said the significant rise positions Curtin as a leading global university.

“Curtin continues to rise year on year in the rankings, and we are committed to continuing on the upward trajectory,” Professor Terry said.

“The University is now placed in the top one per cent of universities worldwide and this incredible achievement is evidence that our drive for excellence in research and education is having a significant impact on our global reputation.”

Meanwhile, Pro Vice-Chancellor, President and Chief Executive of Curtin University Malaysia Professor Jim Mienczakowski remarked, “We at Curtin Malaysia are delighted that Curtin University is now placed in the top one percent of the world’s universities.”

“This achievement, of course, includes all its campuses and it means a lot to us as Curtin’s largest international campus and global hub in Asia, and to be the only foreign branch campus in Borneo able to claim this success along with our sister campuses in Perth, Singapore and Dubai.”

Professor Mienczakowski added that it will be a key consideration for students enrolling at Curtin Malaysia, knowing that they are joining a top-ranked, global university.

He said Curtin Malaysia is proud to have contributed to Curtin’s outstanding achievements in the various global rankings of late, which includes placing 22nd in the 2018 edition of the QS Top 50 under 50 ratings of the world’s top 50 universities founded less than 50 years ago, and rising to 262 position in the highly-acclaimed QS World University Rankings 2017-18.

Curtin also has 21 subjects ranked in the ShanghaiRanking Global Ranking of Academic Subjects released for 2017, including top 100 in the world in five subjects. This is in addition to 16 subjects ranked in the top 200 and seven in the top 100, including second in the world for Mineral and Mining Engineering, in the 2017 QS World University Rankings by Subject.

Professor Mienczakowski thanked the staff of Curtin Malaysia for contributing to the impressive results through enhancements in learning and teaching, research, international collaboration, industry partnerships, graduate employability and infrastructure development. He said Curtin’s improved international reputation is a credit to the hard work of both its staff and students, and an indication of the growing recognition of the university’s graduates.

He also said that the achievements were a welcome ‘icing on the cake’ for Curtin as it marks its ‘50 Years of Innovation’ this year, recognising the combined history of the Western Australian Institute of Technology (WAIT), which opened its doors to students in 1967 and evolved into Curtin University in 1987. Curtin Malaysia has played a crucial part in that celebrated history since it opened in 1999.

The ARWU listing is released annually by the ShanghaiRanking Consultancy, a fully independent organisation dedicated to research on higher education. For more information on the ARWU rankings and the full list, visit www.shanghairanking.com/ARWU2017.html.
