When you think of mural paintings in Malaysia, the first place that comes to mind is almost definitely Penang. Following the success of the street art in Penang, many places followed suit. One town that ALFA will fondly highlight for mural paintings is Kuala Kubu Bharu (KKB) because 40 students invaded the town in Aug 2014 to add 8 wall paintings to their existing 4!
The 40 students who took part in this mural painting project.
The theme of the project was A Taste of Life in Kuala Kubu Bharu. Through this theme, the students wanted to convey the lifestyle, culture and icons of KKB. Let’s see the visual interpretation of their take on KKB wall paintings!
Malaysians love food and the KKB folks are the master of lu mian (more commonly known as loh mee).
The orang asli community is awesome when it comes to harvesting petai from the abundant forest in KKB.
A local bakery situated just around the corner from this mural bakes kaya puffs that delight your sensory.
Everywhere on the internet, the tale of White Crocodile is recorded in the history of Kuala Kubu Bharu. Here, it’s enjoying a good dessert instead of guarding the rivers of KKB.
And everywhere you go in KKB town, you see sunflowers as the landscape decor of choice.
If KKB is about a quiet place to grow up, blowing bubbles is probably one childhood joy that everyone can relate to.
And in this age where we are indulged in swiping our mobile (or tablet) screens, the students remind you of the many other functions of the fingers.
Lastly, the students want the folks at the quiet town (or folks visiting the quiet town) to remember to smile. Because it’s free.
Kuala Kubu Bharu is only about 70km from the capital city of Kuala Lumpur. The town offers nature’s attractions, like waterfall hiking, white water rafting, hot spring and more! On top of that, the town is also very close to Fraser’s Hill. So ring up some friends and plan for a weekend getaway to appreciate the little gifts ALFA students presented to the town.
The sites for the 8 murals painted by ALFA students are concentrated along the alleys of Jalan Dato Muda Jaafar and Jalan Mat Kilau. (Open Map)
You better hurry up because one of the balloons is flying away! ;)
Last but not least, remember to use #KualaKubuBharu and #alfacollegeMY if share photos of the mural on social media. This small act will mean so much to the students. Thanks!
This is a community project endorsed by the Pejabat Belia & Sukan Daerah Hulu Selangor, with the support of The International Award for Young People and Anugerah Remaja Perdana Rakan Muda. Students from the Schools of Visual Communication, Interior Architecture and Architecture of ALFA College participated in the project.
