Entry Requirements

  • GCSE: For all applicants, Grade C or above, or Grade 4 under newly reformed GCSE grading, in English Language, or equivalent. Please note the University does not accept Level 2 Key Skills, Functional Skills or Certificates in Adult Numeracy and Literacy as suitable alternatives to GCSEs.
  • A-level subjects: No specific subjects required. Points from A-Level General Studies and AS-Level subjects (not taken onto full A-Level) can be included towards overall tariff. You must have a minimum of two A-Levels.
  • Relevant subjects: Humanities, Media, English, Social Sciences
  • EDEXCEL (BTEC) Diploma: No specific subjects required.
  • Access: Achievement of the Access to HE Diploma; to include 30 level 3 credits at merit.
  • Baccalaureate IB: No specific subjects required.

English Language Requirement:

  • You will require a minimum overall IELTS score of 7.0, with 6.0 in each component.

Curriculum

Year one

You will be writing features, news stories, reviews and editorials, as well as developing skills in digital media production. You will discover the place of journalism within society and its relationship to democracy and learn about the history and structure of media.

You will study the following compulsory modules:

  • Newsgathering
  • Introduction to Journalism and Public Communication
  • Civic Journalism
  • Introduction to Broadcast Journalism

Year two

You will be working on radio, video and online journalism at level two and will also study journalism law and ethics, research skills and public communication. The year is designed so you can pursue your own specialisms at Level 3.

You will study the following compulsory modules:

  • Broadcast Journalism 1
  • Broadcast Journalism 2
  • Researching Journalism and Public Communication
  • Media Regulation and Law

Final year

You will have a chance to produce a major journalism practical project across the full range of media. There will also be opportunities to consolidate your academic writing skills with a dissertation option.

During the course of the three years students are expected to undertake 15 days work experience. This is evaluated in the final year.

There is a range of optional specialist taught modules from which students can choose.

You will study the following compulsory modules:

  • Advanced Broadcast Journalism 1
  • Advanced Broadcast Journalism 2

Plus two of the following optional modules:

  • Activism and the Media
  • Advanced Feature Writing
  • Journalism Innovations
  • Journalism Dissertation
  • Final Year Project
