Entry Requirements

  • You will need to have four GCSEs at grades A* - C, or relevant experience and/or a Level 2 qualification.

Curriculum

This course is ideal if you wish to enter the marine boatbuilding industry or are already employed in the area of boatbuilding and maintenance and wish to extend your range of skills and knowledge.

This is a very practical 'hands on' course with two days per week spent in the workshops which are located on two sites - a large woodworking workshop situated at the main site in Killigrew St and a Fibre Reinforced Plastic (FRP) workshop at Ponsharden boatyard, between Falmouth and Penryn.

There is one half-day of theory when you will be covering topics such as boat terminology, construction techniques, materials and health and safety. Practical projects include the laminating and fit out of FRP boats, repairing traditional wooden boats, interior fit out and ships joinery techniques.

Throughout the course you will develop practical skills and gain relevant underpinning knowledge, which will be assessed by practical and theory exams. You will build up the evidence of your assessed skills and knowledge in a portfolio. Each unit is internally assessed and verified by your tutors as you progress through the course.
